Why Wedding Celebrants Charge What They Do — And Why It’s Worth Every Penny! by Sarah Donovan Humanist Celebrant
I’m occasionally asked why celebrants charge what they do. And while I can’t speak for every celebrant out there, I can speak for those accredited by the Humanist Association of Ireland — myself included. We’re not just people who turn up on the day and read a script. We’re trained, mentored, and continuously developing our craft. We’re part of a strong, supportive network that shares resources, advice, and even steps in for one another in emergencies. We are professional, experienced, unflappable, and prepared.

Choosing the Right Celebrant
When you’re choosing your celebrant, you’re choosing someone to hold space for one of the most meaningful moments of your life. You want to feel heard. You want to feel understood. You want someone who can guide you without imposing their own ideas. As a Humanist celebrant, I’m grounded in principles of reason, compassion, and equality — and those values gently shape the tone of every ceremony I create. To read more about me, click HERE
Crafting a Ceremony That Reflects You
Your celebrant will bring a wealth of ideas and advice to help you shape a ceremony that’s uniquely yours. Through early conversations, we begin to understand your story, your values, and your journey — and help you reflect those in every detail of the day. I love this part of the process: watching a ceremony take shape that feels truly personal and meaningful.
On the Day
Your celebrant is often the first person your guests meet. A warm smile and a calm presence set the tone. Behind the scenes, I liaise with readers, musicians, photographers, and venue staff. I soothe nerves, cue entrances, and ensure everything flows beautifully. I’ll even make sure there’s water for you and that the setup is just as you envisioned.
Peace of Mind
You deserve to enjoy your ceremony without worrying about logistics. In the lead-up, you’ll receive a final draft of the ceremony script — with any surprises tucked away until the moment arrives. Your celebrant will bring it all to life with grace and warmth. I take great care to ensure everything is in place so you can simply be present.
A Safe Pair of Hands
On the day, I’ll meet you beforehand, have a quiet chat, and help you take a few deep breaths. That moment of calm can make all the difference. You want your ceremony to feel inclusive, heartfelt, and connected — and your celebrant will help make that happen.

Legalities Covered
Your celebrant will ensure all legal requirements are met — from declarations and vows to signed paperwork. I’ll confirm the venue complies with legal stipulations and ensure your Marriage Registration Form is handed to a responsible person for return to the HSE within 30 days. It’s one less thing for you to worry about.

After the Ceremony
Once the confetti settles, your celebrant may send you a final version of your ceremony script — including any last-minute changes or personal vows you kept secret until the day. I often do this as a way to reflect and bring closure to the journey we’ve shared together.
The ceremony is the heart of your wedding day — the reason everyone gathers. Your celebrant plays a vital role in making sure you and your guests feel welcomed, respected, included, and celebrated. Choosing the right celebrant is an investment in peace of mind, joy, and meaning.
And yes — the fee for the right celebrant, especially one accredited by the Humanist Association of Ireland, is money very well spent.
